This Week in Class...

Math - We will begin learning about rounding, estimating sums, and how to use mental math strategies to add.

Reading - We will read the story Kitten's First Full Moon and Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse by Kevin Henkes. We will continue practicing strategies such as finding character traits, setting, plot, and making connections with a text.

Writing - We will continue learning about the different parts of speech. We will work with pronouns and verbs.

Social Studies - We will begin looking at maps and globes. We will create a flip-flap book that shows understanding of the Equator, Prime Meridian, Hemispheres, and Lines of Latitude and Longitude.

Homework...
Your child will be bringing home his/her first reading log. Students should read 20-30 minutes every night. They should write a few sentences about what they read and make note of any interesting vocabulary. Reading Logs are due the following Monday morning.

Snack...
Please send a healthy snack with your child. Fruits, veggies, and grains are appropriate. On Tuesdays and Thursdays every class receives a fruit or vegetable snack that your child can enjoy.

Scholastic News...
On Friday, I sent home an informational page about Scholastic News. It is a wonderful program that will get your child colored magazines with educational articles in the them THAT THEY CAN KEEP!!! :) :) :) If our whole class jumps on board, I plan to use these articles to supplement our reading, writing, science, and social studies lessons in class. We can get SO MUCH from these articles. Please return the info page with $5.00 this week. If the money is an issue, please feel free to express that so we can find a solution. Thanks!

Classroom Supplies:
It is very helpful for each child to have 3 plastic folders. That way, each student can organize his or her reading, writing/spelling, and social studies work in their desks.

Also, it is important that each student has 2 composition notebooks. we will be doing hands on activities to support our learning in both notebooks. We will be using them this week! :)
