Week of December 5th, 2016

This week in class... 

Math: We will be taking our chapter 4 test on multiplication. 

Reading: We have finished our folktale study and we are working on our final projects. 

Writing: We are currently working on opinion writing. 

Science: We will be looking at the characteristics of leaves. 

Please continue to send in box tops! 

We are still collecting money for the Angel Gifts fundraiser to help give kids a good Christmas. We are also skill collecting NEW boots, gloves, scarves, and hats for the homeless in Anchorage.

This Week in Class... 

Math - We will have our Mid-Chapter Checkpoint on multiplication strategies on Thursday. 

Reading - We are continuing out trickster study! 

Writing - We will be talking about facts and opinions. We will be beginning opinion writing soon! 

Spelling - There is no spelling this week. 

Social Studies - We will be talking about the Alaska flag this week! 

This week is a short week! There is NO SCHOOL on Thursday OR Friday in observance of Thanksgiving. 

There is NO spelling this week! Your child will receive his/her spelling list for next week on Wednesday to bring home.

Week of November 14th, 2016

This Week In Class... 

Math - We will begin Chapter 4 and learn strategies for multiplying different numbers. We will do a multiplication project as well! 

Reading - We will begin a folktale studies using stories from different Alaska Native and American Native and Indian groups. We will be focusing on "Trickster Tales" with trickster characters such as the Raven, Coyote, and Rabbit. 

Writing - We will learn about peer editing and writing final drafts for informative writing. 

Science - We will conduct an experiment using white carnations and food coloring! We will explore tree cookies and learn about the inner workings of trees! 

Please send in cans of corn for our school canned food drive. We are collecting only corn, and they will be given to needy families over the holiday season!

Week of November 7th, 2016

This Week in Class... 

Math - We will continue learning about multiplication! 

Reading - We are finishing our author study dioramas and will be presenting on Thursday and Friday. 

Writing - We are starting our informative writing piece. Our topic is Patricia Polacco. 

Spelling - Reminder: I am sending spelling homework home on FRIDAYS and we will test and homework is dues on the following FRIDAY. 

Social Studies - We will discuss the bodies of water that surround Alaska, the state capitol, and the major cities of Alaska. 

If your child has the opportunity to do XtraMath, MAth Whizz, or Lexia at home, please encourage them to use it! 

Please continue to send in box tops for education. We have 300! When we get to 500, we will earn a popcorn party!

There is no school this Friday, November 11th, 2016 

I hope to see everyone at the Aces game on Saturday, November 12th! The Ursa Major choir will be performing the national anthem and it will be military appreciation night!!!

Week of October 31st, 2016

This Week in Class... 

Math - We will be having our chapter 3 mid-chapter checkpoint on Wednesday! We have been practicing using equal groups, repeated addition, and a number line to multiply numbers. 

Reading - We will begin working on our Patricia Polacco final project! PLEASE SEND IN SHOE BOXES! :) 

Writing - We are working towards writing our first informational piece! 

Spelling - Spelling will continue this week. Homework goes home on Monday and is due Friday morning. 

Science - We are finishing pumpkin science and will resume learning about weather and clouds. 

Please send all students to school with the proper outdoor gear: snow pants, snow boots, gloves, hats, insulated jackets. 

Please continue to send in box tops for education. We are more than half way to our goal of 500!

This week in class... 

Math - We are beginning chapter 3 of GoMath! We will be discovering multiplication!  

Reading - we will continue our exploration of Patricia Polacco books! We are practicing deciding on what themes are present in her books. 

Writing - We will be diving into informative writing, using Step Up to Writing. 

Spelling - You child received his/her spelling homework over the weekend to get started learning their words. Our test will be THURSDAY! 

Science - We are continuing pumpkin science. We will ask questions about our pumpkin and learn about the life cycle. 

THERE IS NO SCHOOL THIS FRIDAY, OCTOBER 21ST 

Box Tops... 
We are half way to our goal of 500! When we reach our goal, our class will earn a popcorn party. Please continue to bring on Box Tops! Thanks!

Week of October 10th, 2016

This Week in Class... 

Math - Due to low test scores on time and elapsed time, we will take the week to review and retake our test on Friday. Expect math homework every night this week. 

Reading - We will continue our Patricia Polacco author study. We will begin the week with the story Rotten Richie and the Ultimate Dare. 

Writing - We will begin friendly letter writing! We will be pen pals with my sister's 3rd grade class in Utah! 

Science - I hope to begin pumpkin science this Thursday! I've had 5 families decide to donate pumpkins! WOW! :) 

We will have a guest speaker this Wednesday! We will do fun activities with leaves outside!!! 

***Please make sure to send ALL MATH TESTS back to school signed. I keep them for data and portfolios. If you have any still at home, send them back to school. Thanks!

This week in class... 

Math - we are practicing telling time to the minute and elapsed time. We will have our test on time this Friday! 

Reading - We are presenting our paper bag projects. Also, we will begin our next author atudy on Patricia Polacco!!! 

Writing - We are continuing sentence mastery and will begin writing paragraphs. 

Social Studies - We are learning about the continents and oceans!

Week of September 26th, 2016

This Week in Class... 

Math - We are beginning Chapter 10 this week. We will be learning and practicing telling time. I encourage families to continue working with their children at home with telling time on analog clocks. 

Reading - This week we will work on our final project for our Kevin Henkes author study! We will be doing a Paper Bag Project on the character of Lilly. We will create the bags at school, and next weekend your child will find 10 items at home that represent Lilly to fill their bag. Your child will bring home a rubric for the project this week! 

Writing - We are continuing to master sentence writing. We will also learn the different types of sentences: Statement, Command, Question, and Exclamation. 

Spelling - Homework is sent home on Mondays. Please ensure your child completes 3 different activities throughout the week. Spelling homework is due Friday, on test day! 

Science - This week we will begin looking at different types of clouds. If weather is calm, we will adopt a tree on the playground to watch throughout the year. 

Social Emotional Learning - This year we are using a social emotional learning (SEL) curriculum called "Second Step". We are currently learning and practicing how to "Focus our attention" and "Listen". I encourage families to work with their children at home on listening to one another with eyes on the speaker, ears listening, and asking questions in response. These are HUGE skills for young people and are essential for success in life! :) 

Box Tops: 
Please continue to send in Box Tops for Education! I've had three students bring them in so far! Classes at Ursa Major are working towards collecting 500 Box Tops to earn a popcorn party! :) 

Leaves: 
I've had some students bring in different kinds of leaves, and I myself have been on the trails collecting leaves. Please continue to bring in different kinds of leaves. We will have a guest speaker in mid-October who will do fun activities with us using the leaves. Thanks!

Week of September 19th, 2016

This week in class... 

Math - On Tuesday, we will be taking our first end of chapter test on Chapter One. We will begin Chapter Ten on Wednesday. 

Reading - We will be finishing our Kevin Henkes author study with our last story Chrysanthemum.

Writing - This week we will work on mastering sentence writing. 

Spelling - This will be our second week with spelling. Your child has been placed into 1 of 3 spelling groups based on their spelling inventory from the first week of school. In class, we sort the spelling words based on patterns each day. At home, your child is responsible for doing three activities during the week to practice spelling their words. Homework is due Friday for participation points. Spelling tests are each Friday. 

Science - We will begin our study of weather and clouds. We will learn about temperature. 

Homework
Reminder: Reading Logs are due every Monday. Math homework from the previous night is due the following day. 

Box Tops
Please send in Box Tops for Education. You can find them on many food boxes that you might have in your home. The more Box Tops we bring in, the the closer our class will get to earning a reward.

Week of September 5th, 2016

This week in class... 

Math - We will continue practicing strategies for adding. Our first math quiz will be Friday! The quiz will cover rounding, estimating and strategies for adding. 

Reading - We are continuing our author study of Kevin Henkes. We are reading the story Lilly's Big Day this week. 

Writing - We are learning about verbs and adverbs this week. 

Social Studies - We will continue to learn about features on maps and globes and continue a project. 

Homework...

Your child is bringing home a new reading log today. Your child should be reading 20-30 minutes each night and filling out his/her reading log. Reading logs are due Monday. 

Reminder: If students do not complete math work in class it goes home for homework. Please send the homework back completed the next day. Sometimes the assignment will be given participation points. IF the assignment is more than 1 day late, your child will not receive the points. 

Spelling homework will start next week! Stay tuned! 

Snack... 
Please send healthy snacks with your child. Fruits, veggies, and grains are appropriate. On Tuesdays and Thursdays only the school receives a veggie or fruit snack for every child. I do not provide snack for students that did not bring one. If families would like to donate packaged snacks such a fruits snacks or packaged gold fish, that would be awesome! 

Scholastic News... 
I still have not heard from 7 families about the Scholastic News program for our class. Please return the purple form and fee as soon as possible. If the fee is an issue, some families have paid for extra magazines, so please let me know if that would be helpful. Thanks!

Week of August 29th, 2016

This Week in Class... 

Math - We will begin learning about rounding, estimating sums, and how to use mental math strategies to add. 

Reading - We will read the story Kitten's First Full Moon and Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse by Kevin Henkes. We will continue practicing strategies such as finding character traits, setting, plot, and making connections with a text. 

Writing - We will continue learning about the different parts of speech. We will work with pronouns and verbs. 

Social Studies - We will begin looking at maps and globes. We will create a flip-flap book that shows understanding of the Equator, Prime Meridian, Hemispheres, and Lines of Latitude and Longitude. 

Homework... 
Your child will be bringing home his/her first reading log. Students should read 20-30 minutes every night. They should write a few sentences about what they read and make note of any interesting vocabulary. Reading Logs are due the following Monday morning. 

Snack... 
Please send a healthy snack with your child. Fruits, veggies, and grains are appropriate. On Tuesdays and Thursdays every class receives a fruit or vegetable snack that your child can enjoy. 

Scholastic News... 
On Friday, I sent home an informational page about Scholastic News. It is a wonderful program that will get your child colored magazines with educational articles in the them THAT THEY CAN KEEP!!! :) :) :) If our whole class jumps on board, I plan to use these articles to supplement our reading, writing, science, and social studies lessons in class. We can get SO MUCH from these articles. Please return the info page with $5.00 this week. If the money is an issue, please feel free to express that so we can find a solution. Thanks!

Week of August 22nd, 2016

This week in class... 

Math- We are taking a beginning of the year assessment so I know where your student is with math concepts. We will begin chapter 1 of GoMath! which will cover addition, subtraction, and rounding. ***Work that is not completed during the day will be sent home for homework and will be due the following morning. 

Writing- We will begin our interactive notebooks (Please send 2 composition notebooks to school) learning about the different parts of speech. We will be working with nouns. 

Reading- We will begin our author study of Kevin Henkes. We will be working on setting, character traits, plots, and making connections to ourselves. 

Science- We are setting up our science notebooks. We will be learning about weather and the seasons this year! 

Classroom Supplies: 
It is very helpful for each child to have 3 plastic folders. That way, each student can organize his or her reading, writing/spelling, and social studies work in their desks. 

Also, it is important that each student has 2 composition notebooks. we will be doing hands on activities to support our learning in both notebooks. We will be using them this week! :)

I am so happy to have your student in my class this year! I will post weekly to keep you updated on what we are learning each week. Here is our class supply list to help your student be prepared and organized :) 
2 Mead composition notebooks (no spirals)
3 plastic folders (1 blue, 1 green, 1 yellow)
48 Ticonderoga pencils
1 -24 package of crayons
1 pack of washable markers
1 pack of colored pencils
4 dry erase markers (black)
1 pair of scissors
2 bottles of liquid glue
4 Large size glue sticks
2 Erasers
1 Plastic container with your child’s name on it for their supplies.
***Extra supplies will be kept in the classroom and available to all students to share.

Supplies that are not required, but are appreciated:
1 container of Clorox wipes
1 box of gallon bags
1 box of sandwich bags

1 bottle of hand sanitizer

This Week in Class: 

Math - We will continue learning about fractions! Our Chapter Test will be next week! 

Walk to Read - There will only be walk to read on Monday. Students will be in their homerooms for reading/writing instruction from March 29th - April 8th due to AMP Testing. 

Science - We will continue our exploration of the states of matter. We will be doing a dissolving race with sugar! 

AMP Testing is THIS WEEK!!! ***Testing for our class will be Thursday the 31st and Friday the 1st. AMP Testing is coming up NEXT WEEK!!! 
*** 3rd grade will be AMP Testing on March 31st and April 1st from 9:15 - 12:15 each day. In the afternoon, we will be doing fun and relaxing activities :) 

As a fun way to show our support and encourage everyone to do well on the tests, student council wants to have AMP spirit days for the rest of this week and then on Monday of next week.

Variety Show Baskets!

Hello Wonderful Families! 

Your child is bringing home information and a permission slip about the Ursa Major Variety Show in February! Our class will be performing the song "Do I Dare" along with Ms. Conner and Mrs. Thomas' classes! 

Part of the variety show is putting together themed baskets for auction. 3rd grade chose to put together a "Movie Night" basket. Please make donations for our basket. Dino Lights Field Trip Permission Slips Due This Week!!!

I am still missing a lot of permission slips and money for our field trip. 

Permission Slips and money are due to me by Monday, February 1st, 2016 (Preferably before then). 

Field Trip day is March 21st, 2016 and we will leave at 9:15 and return at 12:00. 

Fee: $8.00 for both students and chaperones. 

We still need chaperones. If you can chaperone please let me know :)
